Singapore celebrates International Year of Astronomy

Time: 8:30 pm till late (overnight)

Venue: : East Coast Park Area D (Field nearest to CP D1) See Map here

Target Age Group: Suitable for All Age Groups

Contact Email: mpastrosociety@gmail.com

Earth Hour is a global event that encourages companies and households to turn off their lights for one hour (in Singapore) from 8:30pm – 9:30pm, taking a stand to fight global warming. Hence getting our friends and neighbours involved is a simple way to be a part of this international event by inviting them to East Coast Park and stargaze with us

Consequently, it is an excellent way to promote astronomy at East Coast Park, where they can join us for a night of stargazing. It will also benefit Astronomers in Singapore to help fight the light pollution problem here.

There will be exhibition posters to educate the public on environmental issues (e.g. global warming and its dangers posed), ways to conserve energy and of course, about astronomy.

I may be biased on this. Well…… Nah. Anyway today is also Einstein’s birthday as well as Pi (3.14blablabla) day. Wonderful indeed.

Gerry And The Pacemakers

When you walk through the storm
Hold your head up high
And don’t be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
There’s a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of the lark

Walk on, through the wind
Walk on, through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone

Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone

Count on Tuesday’s alignment of the calendar to add some excitement to the lives of at least a few math geeks.

Tuesday is Square Root Day, a rare holiday that occurs when the day and the month are both the square root of the last two digits of the current year. Numerically, March 3, 2009, can be expressed as 3/3/09, or mathematically as √9 = 3, or 3² = 3 × 3 = 9. Read more
